Dear sisters and brothers,We have just entered the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which makes up most of the liturgical year in the Catholic church. It's the time that falls outside of the major seasons like Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. It's called "ordinary" not because the weeks are unimportant, but because the weeks are numbered. Ordinary comes from the Latin word "ordo", from which we get the English word "order". Ordinary Time is the ordered life of the Church, the period during which we live our lives neither feasting (Christmas and Easter season), nor fasting (Advent or Lent).
We had a great turnout for the evening Mass on the Feast Day of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton last week. We are very fortunate to have a new painting of our patron saint, which was painted and donated to our church by local artist, Carito Nieto. One of the Sisters of Charity from Emmitsburg, Md., was on hand for the event handing out Holy Cards and greeting those attending the Mass and reception afterward. We also just celebrated Catholic Schools Week last week. We are very proud to have a Blue Ribbon School of Education for our children to attend, Mary of Nazareth School. Our parish school is located in Darnestown, Md. It offers classes for preschool through eighth grade. They will be hosting an Open House on Sun., Jan. 29, 2012, from 1 to 3 p.m. In addition, they will be holding registration for the next school year, 2012-2013, on Tues., Feb. 7, and Thurs., Feb. 9, from 9 to 1030 a.m. both days. More information on what is required to register your child may be found on pg. 3 of this bulletin. Information on tuition assistance from the Archdiocese of Washington is also available.
Please don't forget to participate in the Monday morning prayerful protest on Wisteria Dr. from 8 to 10 a.m. Join other prayer warriors as we gather on the sidewalk in front of the offices of Executive Park Terrace where LeRoy Carhart performs late-term abortions at Germantown Reproductive Health Services. Over 700 babies died there during 2011. Please pray for Carhart to have a change of heart.
God bless all of you.
Fr. Carlos, Pastor
